What Is Scaling and Root Planing?

Scaling and root planing is a non-surgical periodontal treatment that may be recommended for patients with gum disease. Often referred to as a "deep cleaning," this procedure removes plaque, tartar, and bacteria from below the gumline while smoothing the root surfaces of your teeth.

The goal of scaling and root planing is to:

• Reduce harmful bacteria beneath the gums.
• Help inflamed gum tissue begin to heal.
• Slow or stop the progression of periodontal disease.
• Support healthier gums and help protect the bone surrounding your teeth.

Not every patient with gum disease requires scaling and root planing. Milan Sata, DDS will perform a comprehensive periodontal evaluation to determine whether this treatment—or another personalized approach—is appropriate based on the condition of your gums and supporting tissues.
