Do I Need a Filling or a Crown?
The best treatment depends on the amount of healthy tooth structure that remains and the extent of the damage.
When a tooth becomes damaged by decay, a crack, or normal wear, one of the first questions patients ask is whether they need a filling or a dental crown. The answer depends on how much of the natural tooth remains and how well it can be restored.
At Grand Blanc Dental Center, Milan Sata, DDS carefully evaluates each tooth before recommending treatment. Our goal is always to preserve as much healthy tooth structure as possible while providing a durable, long-lasting restoration.
When Is a Filling Recommended?
Dental fillings are typically used when decay or damage is relatively small and enough healthy tooth remains to support the restoration. Tooth-colored composite fillings restore the affected area while blending naturally with your surrounding teeth.
A filling may be recommended if you have:
- A small to moderate cavity
- A minor chip or fracture
- An old filling that needs replacement
- Early tooth decay before extensive damage occurs
When Is a Crown Recommended?
If a tooth has lost too much structure to be predictably restored with a filling, a dental crown may provide better long-term protection. A crown completely covers the visible portion of the tooth, restoring its strength, function, and appearance.
A crown may be recommended for:
- Large cavities
- Cracked or fractured teeth
- Teeth weakened after root canal therapy
- Severely worn teeth
- Large failing fillings
Can a Filling Become a Crown Later?
Yes. Over time, a tooth that was successfully restored with a filling may eventually require a crown if additional decay develops, the filling becomes too large, or the remaining tooth structure weakens. Regular dental exams help monitor existing restorations and identify concerns before they become more serious.
Our Conservative Approach
Whenever possible, Dr. Sata recommends the most conservative treatment that will successfully restore your tooth. If a filling can provide a predictable, long-lasting result, that may be the preferred option. If additional strength and protection are needed, a crown may offer the best long-term solution.
